In addition to cleaning Oriental Rugs, at Ward’s we offer a full service workroom. Binding, Serging, Fringing, and Re-Sizing are workroom services many of our customers take advantage of.

 

Binding

Binding is normally used to secure the end of a rug when fraying occurs. It is also used as the initial part of the fringing process in order to secure the end of the rug before the new fringe is attached.
At Ward’s we use the finest binding available on today’s market in a wide variety of colors. Our selection has both traditional and contemporary colors for our customers to choose from. Our binding machine is a new state of the art piece of equipment manufactured by Bond Products.

Serging

Serging is done in most cases to the sides or selvedge part of the rug. Since serging is made of cotton, it along with the fringe which is also cotton is the most fragile part of a rug, and therefore is the first part to show wear. It can be easily replaced to make the rug look as good as new. As with our binding colors, we carry an array of both traditional and contemporary colors in our serging inventory.

Fringing

Some people say, its just not an oriental rug without fringe. In a hand knotted rug, fringe is a part of the foundation of the rug. On a machine made rug, fringe is most times sewn on after the rug is complete. In either case, fringe is made of cotton and therefore is prone to wear or damage with use. At Ward’s we carry a large selection of fringe, both knotted (formal) and brush (informal). When replacing old fringe, the first step is to remove remnants of the old fringe. We then bind the end of the rug and sew on the new fringe. The finished product gives the rug a new lease on life.

Re-Sizing

From time to time changes in our lives like moving, buying new furniture, tearing up wall to wall carpeting to make room for a hard wood floor necessitate re-sizing a rug to fit into its new environment. While we make it abundantly clear to our customers that cutting an oriental rug will have an effect on its value, we also understand that sometimes it is necessary in order to continue to be able to use the rug.
