Repair
and Restoration |

At
Ward’s we pride ourselves in our ability to use age
old techniques to repair rugs by hand. Each hand made rug is unique and we will be happy to give you several options as well as our professional opinion based on the age, value and quality of each rug. If you have a one
hundred year old Sarouk, it is worth spending the money to
have it hand repaired. If you have a two year old nylon Heriz,
it is not worth spending the money to have it repaired by
hand, rather you’d want a less expensive fix which we
would recommend.

| Overcasting
Overcasting is a “lock stitch” done between the warp and weft threads which run the length and width of a rug and form its foundation. This stitch is used to stop or prevent unraveling.. |

Repairing
Tears
Machine made rugs are repaired using a hot patch on the underside of the rug and will last indefinitely. Hand knotted rugs are sewn together by hand using a very durable thread. |
| Re-Coloring
Due
to traffic patterns or simply wear from years of use, the pile of a rug may be worn down to the foundation, thereby creating a “bare spot”. A rug can either be re-woven or re-dyed determined by the value of the rug.

Repairs
by Hand |
"To
repair or not to repair, that is the question."
Hand repairing a rug can be a time consuming and sometimes costly affair. Paying for a skilled craftsman’s work in almost any discipline is never inexpensive. At Ward’s Oriental Rug Service we will be happy to discuss the history and value (both monetary and sentimental) of your rug as well as all options available before any work is begun. Please feel free to call us with any questions regarding repairs. You can also e-mail photographs of your rug along with a description of services needed. |
